Abstract: |
This paper examines the role of ethnic enclaves as labor market intermediaries. We use linked employer-employee data to measure the quantity and quality of networks defined by geographic and ethnic proximity. We identify detailed ethnic composition of neighborhoods using high geographic resolution and universe of workers. We then use this to measure the impact of networks on the outcomes of recent immigrants. We find sizeable and significant effects on employment and earnings of social networks for recent immigrants, and the results are robust under a variety of different specifications and that endogenous location decisions are unlikely to fully account for the results
